What Happens in Counselling?

A Safe and Supportive Space to Talk

At its core, counselling is simply a space where you can talk openly about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgement. Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, confusing, or emotionally heavy. Counselling offers time and space to reflect on what’s going on for you, with someone trained to listen carefully and support you in making sense of things at your own pace.

You don’t need to be in crisis to access counselling. Many people attend sessions to better understand themselves, work through difficult emotions, improve relationships, or navigate life changes.

What Happens in the First Session?

The first session is usually an opportunity to begin getting to know one another.

We may talk about:

  • What has brought you to counselling

  • Any concerns or challenges you are currently facing

  • What you might hope to gain from sessions

  • Any questions you have about the process

For children and young people, this first session may also involve parents or carers to ensure everyone feels informed and comfortable with how counselling will work.

There is no pressure to share everything straight away. Building trust takes time, and sessions will move at a pace that feels manageable for you or your child.

What Do You Talk About in Counselling?

Each person’s experience of counselling is unique. Some people come with a clear difficulty they would like support with, while others may simply feel “not quite themselves” and want space to explore why.

Sessions might focus on:

  • Feelings of anxiety or low mood

  • Stress or overwhelm

  • Relationship or family difficulties

  • Confidence or self-esteem

  • Loss or change

  • Managing emotions

  • Identity or personal development

You are always free to decide what you would like to talk about.

How Long Does Counselling Last?

There is no set length of time for counselling, as everyone’s needs are different.

Some people find that a small number of sessions is enough to help them feel clearer and more able to cope. Others may choose to continue for longer to explore deeper or more long-standing difficulties.

What is the Aim of Counselling?

Counselling is not about being given advice or told what to do.

Instead, it aims to:

  • Help you understand yourself better

  • Explore your thoughts and emotions

  • Develop coping strategies

  • Improve emotional wellbeing

  • Feel more confident in managing life’s challenges

For children and young people, counselling can also support emotional development, build confidence, and help them learn safe ways to express and manage their feelings.
